Students from the University of Missouri have traveled to San Diego to cook Thanksgiving dinner for the crew of the USS Boxer.
Six students will be on board the Boxer to prepare the holiday meal as part of MU's school of hospitality management's "Adopt a Ship" program.
The Adopt a Ship program has been around for 15 years, and is a result of the Naval Supply Systems Command teaming up with the American Culinary Federation.
MU’s hospitality management program's Leslie Jett says "Adopt a Ship" gives students the experience of preparing food on a large scale:
“The students are going to see things that they are not going to see in a classroom. We are one of only a couple of schools that actually get to participate. It’s something they can add to their resume, but for them to be there on Thanksgiving, to understand what it is like to be on the ship, to be part of that community on a holiday instead of being with their families.”
The students making Thanksgiving dinner this year for the Boxer crew say they're incredibly grateful for the experience, and the chance to say "thanks" to the Sailors on board for their sacrifice. Check out the video up top!
