Marine Cpl. Christopher M. Monahan Jr. died November 26 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense.
The 25-year-old was assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 2, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.
Monahan was from Ocean Gate, New Jersey. His mother told the New Jersey Star-Ledger the last time she spoke to her son was last Saturday:
"He was definitely excited to be coming home. He had one more holiday to miss. He was going to be home in 73 days and had already started the countdown."
Monahan leaves behind three children, ages 6, 4, and 1.
