Army Spc. Nickolas S. Welch, 26, died August 6 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, of injuries he suffered July 23 in Afghanistan.
He was fatally wounded when his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device in Soltan Kheyl, Wardak Province, Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense.
Welch was from Mill City, Oregon. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart in Georgia.
KATU.com reports Welch was on his first deployment to Afghanistan when he suffered his fatal injuries.
