The San Diego-based USS Cowpens is in the Philippines as part of Operation Damayan, the U.S. military's humanitarian mission to help victims of Typhoon Haiyan.
Cowpens Public Affairs reports the “Scorpions” of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 49, Detachment 6, have started a collection of snack foods as a morale booster for the Filipino children suffering in the wake of the typhoon.
Cookies, potato chips and candy are just some of the treats the Naval Air Station North Island-based Scorpions are gathering up for the little ones.
Naval Aircrewman William Casson explained:
“It wasn’t until I started seeing the children that my heart strings were pulled.
“Today, in addition to the supplies we picked up from various locations and distributed throughout the area, I took three boxes of cookies, crackers.
"The children received their own taste of something that I hope is familiar and the look on their faces was ecstatic. We have a collection in the hanger for the crew to drop off any candy, snacks or food they desire.”
