A Hawker Hunter MK-58 military jet crashed Wednesday in the Ventura County city of Port Hueneme, killing the pilot.
Kimberly Gearhart with Naval Base Ventura County told Los Angeles television station KTLA-TV the aircraft flew out of Point Mugu Naval Air Station.
The pilot was a civilian who was employed by the defense contractor Hunter Aviation International, Inc.
The Los Angeles Times reports the Hawker Hunter MK-58 went down east of Pacific Coast Highway in a Port Hueneme agricultural field at 5:13 p.m. PDT.
An FAA spokesman said two people were aboard the plane, a pilot and passenger. The status of the passenger isn't yet known.
