S.D. Will Feel Impact Of SAIC Departure

San Diego won’t lose too many local jobs when SAIC moves its headquarters to Virginia. But one local business analyst says the city will feel the impact in other ways.

The science and technology company employs about 4,500 people in San Diego and most of those jobs will remain here. But there will be other consequences. Sandy Ehrlich is the director of San Diego State’s Entrepreneurial Management Center. He says companies that provided services to the headquarters may be impacted. And he says the loss of SAIC might mean the loss of local philanthropic donations that often come with a Fortune 500 company. Ehrlich says there’s also the problem of perception.

“It’s the sense that California is a difficult state to do business in, and that the regulations in California, the tax structure in California burden businesses,” he says.

Ehrlich says this move could embolden other geographic areas to come after businesses located in California.
