San Diego Council To Get Balanced Budget

San Diego Council To Get Balanced Budget
For the first time in years San Diego is not looking at an upcoming budget deficit. The council will be presented with the mayor’s proposed budget today.

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders will present his proposed budget to the council this afternoon.

His office is touting it as the first truly balanced budget in decades and said the city will have a $119 million total surplus over the next five years.

The budget does not make any further services reductions and makes the full annual pension payment.

The mayor’s office credits San Diego’s improved financial picture to a lower-than-projected pension payment, increased revenue and cost cutting at the city. The council will now begin holding hearings on the budget.

A big decision awaits some voters this July as the race for San Diego County’s Supervisor District 1 seat heats up. Are you ready to vote? Check out the KPBS Voter Hub to learn about the candidates, the key issues the board is facing and how you can make your voice heard.
