San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station will conduct its annual emergency siren test on Wednesday morning. The test will include the sounding of 52 sirens, located in surrounding communities within ten miles of the plant, according to Gil Alexander, spokesman for Southern California Edison, SCE.
The sirens will be activated between 10 a.m. and noon and last for approximately 3 minutes each time, he says. The sirens will sound a continuous steady tone, he says.
During an emergency, the system would be used by government officials to notify the public in the event of a nuclear or non-nuclear emergency requiring immediate action, according to SCE.
Residents, businesses and schools in the area are receiving fliers and other materials to notify them about the upcoming test, according to SCE. Radio stations will also inform the public before and during the sounding of the sirens.
