A brush fire broke out in Poway Friday, shutting down a portion of state Route 67 in both directions, but no structures were threatened.

The fire started just before 12:45 p.m. and quickly grew to about two acres. The freeway was closed in both directions from Poway Road to Mount Woodson while air and ground crews worked to knock down the flames, according to the California Highway Patrol.

According to the CHP, a driver operating a motor home towing a vehicle reported that the car lost a tire and was sparking, with white smoke pouring out of the back, possibly starting the fire.

San Diego Fire-Rescue will look into the report as they work to determine the cause of the blaze, Cal Fire Capt. Kendal Bortisser said.

As of 2 p.m., the fire was holding at two acres, Bortisser said.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
