Teen Killed Crossing Street After L.A. Unified Closure

A 17-year-old boy was struck by a city-operated semi-truck in Highland Park Tuesday morning and died at the scene, Los Angeles police reported.

The teen, who was reportedly a student at a nearby charter school, was killed about 7:30 a.m. at Figueroa Street and Avenue 60.

His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives. The driver remained at the scene and was interviewed by police.

An LAPD officer at the scene told reporters that the city truck was making a left when it struck the teen, who was either walking to or from school.

The accident occurred amid the closure of the Los Angeles Unified's roughly 900 campuses due to a threat received electronically by the nation's second-largest school district.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences.
