Homeless Man Assaulted By Person Attempting To Rob Him

A homeless man sleeping under a freeway overpass in Mission Valley was kicked and hit in the head with an empty bottle Friday morning by someone attempting to steal from him, police said.

The 60-year-old victim awoke around 5 a.m. to the suspect rifling through his things, which were in a box near a pedestrian walkway in the 7400 block of Hazard Center Drive near state Route 163, San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick. The victim was kicked when he told the man to stop.

Apparently the suspect did not find what he was looking for. He struck the victim with an empty bottle. Battrick said the victim suffered a non-life- threatening head wound and was taken to a hospital to be treated.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
