A firefighter was being treated Wednesday for multiple fractures suffered when a stack of cardboard toppled onto him while crews were working to extinguish a blaze at a Spring Valley recycling yard.
The firefighter, whose name was withheld, was admitted to Sharp Memorial Hospital with fractures to his left shoulder, hip and leg as the fire spread over about a half-acre of piled paper and cardboard bundles in the 3800 block of Bancroft Drive on Tuesday morning, Cal Fire said.
"Doctors continue to assess his injuries and will determine an appropriate course of treatment in conjunction with the injured and his family," Cal Fire Capt. Issac Sanchez said.
No other injuries were reported, but a duplex on the property was damaged and four nearby homes were evacuated, Cal Fire said.
The fire was brought under control within two hours, but crews conducting overhaul and mop-up operations remained at the scene overnight.
