  • Art, Gardens and Inspiration Bloom on Mother’s Day Weekend Looking for a Mother’s Day outing that feels relaxed, creative and distinctly North County? The 29th Annual Mother’s Day Weekend Art, Garden & Studio Tour returns Saturday and Sunday, May 9 and 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Hosted by the nonprofit San Dieguito Art Guild, this beloved self-guided driving tour invites visitors inside eight private homes across North San Diego County — each offering a blend of art, architecture and distinctive gardens. More than 30 Guild artists will exhibit and sell their work throughout the properties, including paintings, ceramics, glass, gourd art, fiber arts, photography and jewelry. Artists are stationed throughout the gardens, creating an open-air gallery experience where guests can meet makers, ask questions and purchase directly. Complimentary refreshments will be served at every stop. Each home offers its own personality and setting. This year’s tour includes properties featuring a pool with a rocky waterfall and sweeping canyon views; dramatic subtropical and desert landscaping; a front yard devoted entirely to succulents; kinetic metal and mosaic yard art; multiple water features; and even resident goats (guests are welcome to greet them, but not touch or feed). Another stop showcases seventeen fruit trees alongside vibrant proteas and exotic succulents, while a coastal home offers a laid-back garden with a soothing fountain and brick fire pit. Tickets are valid both days, and guests are welcome to revisit favorite homes. Many attendees make it an annual tradition — gathering mothers, daughters and friends for a leisurely weekend of beauty, creativity and connection. The tour serves as the Guild’s primary fundraiser of the year. Proceeds support the Guild’s mission to promote artistic understanding and foster artistic growth within the community through education and outreach. A portion of net proceeds will be awarded to visual arts education programs. One featured home will also host TERi Inc., a nonprofit organization that supports individuals with special needs. TERi clients create and sell original artwork, with proceeds benefiting their programs and teachers. Tickets are $40 per person and go on sale in early April. They may be purchased at Off Track Gallery (937 South Coast Highway 101, Suite C-103, Encinitas), online at SanDieguitoArtGuild.com, or at any tour home during the event. Well-behaved children 17 and under are free. For more information, visit SanDieguitoArtGuild.com, email pr@sandieguitoartguild.com, or call 760-805-0434. • A heart transplant scheduled in two weeks. A patient undergoing multiple kidney transplants until one works. Behind it is a multi-billion-dollar industry designed to supply organs—on demand. As forced organ harvesting has expanded from Falun Gong practitioners to Uyghurs—and potentially beyond China’s borders—the implications are no longer distant. Americans are connected through organ tourism, medical collaboration, and global supply chains. At stake are the principles of medical ethics and the question of who determines life and death. Join Jan Jekielek, senior editor at The Epoch Times and host of American Thought Leaders, for a live discussion marking the release of Killed to Order—a timely investigation into one of the most consequential human rights issues of our time, and what it means for our communities today. • The latest film from the great Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa ("My Joy") is a scalpel-precise tale of the horrors of totalitarian bureaucracy. Adapting a novel by Soviet writer and political prisoner Georgy Demidov, set in the Soviet Union in 1937, Loznitsa follows the attempts of an idealistic government-appointed prosecutor (Alexander Kuznetsov) to expose the mistreatment of a dissident Bolshevik writer who has been jailed and tortured without evidence of wrongdoing. As he gradually comes to realize, the lack of cause for the man’s imprisonment is hardly unique under Stalin’s regime, and the neophyte lawyer may be putting himself in danger by exposing his own moral righteousness. Loznitsa constructs his story with a patient yet unmistakable sense of mounting dread, focusing on the devastating minutiae that allows fascism to function in our world. • The daring experimenter Dr. John C. Lilly dedicated his life to radical self-investigation and unlocking the mysteries of consciousness and communication. “My body is my laboratory” was the motto, and his research on the language of dolphins and whales – as well as psychedelics and sensory deprivation – assured his own cult status in 20th-century pop culture as the basis for Ken Russel’s Altered States and Mike Nichols’ The Day of the Dolphin. Directors Michael Almereyda and Courtney Stephens, along with narrator Chloë Sevigny, explore the life of a determined scientist and his experiments into the psychonautical unknown. “An illuminating work of cultural archaeology” "Earth Coincidence paints Lilly as a 20th-century polymath, a one-of-a-kind maverick" —THE FILM STAGE Digital Gym Cinema on Facebook / Instagram
