  • Ekphrastic poets find their inspiration in the visual. Their poems imagine, describe, or expand upon the “story” of an image or work of art. Every ekphrastic poem is its own work of art, separate but related to the visual inspiration. In this workshop, you will learn about well-known and not-so-well-known ekphrastic poems, and you will learn a methodology so that you can confidently approach this exciting cross-genre space. You will work in the Inspirations Gallery and create one or more unique poems. You will have the option to share your work aloud, as well as past poems, in a book in the gallery. Sharing is NOT required but an option for anyone who’d like to do it. San Diego Writers, Ink on Facebook / Instagram

  • OTCYA presents "Seussical the Musical," a vibrant, family-friendly summer production at the historic Sunshine Brooks Theater (217 N. Coast Highway, Oceanside, CA)! “Oh, the thinks you can think” when Dr. Seuss’ most beloved characters collide and cavort in an unforgettable musical caper! Tony Award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty bring to life Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie, and a young dreamer with a big imagination—Jojo. Narrated by the mischievous Cat in the Hat, the story follows Horton as he discovers a speck of dust containing the Whos, including Jojo, a child sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks.” As Horton protects the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, he also cares for an abandoned egg left behind by the carefree Mayzie La Bird. Though faced with ridicule, peril, and even a trial, Horton remains steadfast—with Gertrude McFuzz by his side, never losing faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are tested—and triumph. Seussical is a whimsical, heartwarming experience that is fun for the whole family! • In this talk Patricia Kelly will share how quilting led her to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a fashion designer and history teacher. About Patricia: At the age of 12, Patricia learned to sew and enjoyed designing her own clothes. After graduating from high school, she planned to follow her childhood dream; however, she was advised to pursue another career. Twenty years ago, Patricia was invited to join a quilting class. Learning to quilt opened a whole new world of creativity for her. In 2014 she joined the San Diego People of Color Quilt Guild. Guild Mentors guided her as she honed her quilting skills and encouraged her to learn more about contemporary and traditional African and African American textile arts. Patricia has participated in local and national quilt exhibits. This year, she will participate in her first international show. One of her art quilts is on permanent display at the County of San Diego's Southeast Live Center office. Her work has been included in "Art Quilting Studio Magazine" and in the book "Lift the Sky" In May 2025, she won third place in the Quilt Africa International Challenge honoring the late Carole Lyles Shaw. With an eclectic ensemble of queer performers, including drag icon Lady Bunny and POSE's Danielle Cooper, "Playland" is transdisciplinary in every sense of the word: music, dance, archival footage, tableaux, opera, and performance art are layered into an ethereal piece subverting all boundaries. Produced by Palomar Cinema Professor Russell Sheaffer, Georden West’s debut feature is an expressionist and very queer bricolage, focusing on an atemporal night in Boston’s oldest gay bar, the Playland Café.
