Blessed with one the best soundtracks ever put on film, "The Harder They Come" is a gritty and razor sharp vision of working class life in Jamaica, a ground-breaking film that demonstrated that music and art can change the world. Jimmy Cliff who died in 2025 plays Ivan, a young songwriter who leaves the country for the big city to find his fortune. His dreams of making it in the music business and his battles with crooked promoters, religious conservatives and criminals on both sides of the law make him a folk hero. Shot in 1972 at the dawn of the blaxpoitation era in American movies following the success of Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, Shaft, and Super Fly, this Jamaican film is a significant achievement in the development, in the 1970s, of both an international Black popular culture and worldwide Black independent film movement. Introducing...Cinema Club! A new monthly program which includes a film screening followed by a community discussion for cinephiles and movie lovers interested in having thought-provoking conversations about cinema. This month's featured film is "Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)" (2021) in celebration of Black History Month. A powerful and transporting documentary—part music film, part historical record—created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture, and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just 100 miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park. The footage was largely forgotten—until now. "Summer of Soul" shines a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being and stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present.
