Saturday, October 19, from 2 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. The seasons are changing, and it's a beautiful time of year to celebrate by creating whimsical fused glass art for your garden or windows! Your bright and cheerful sun catchers and garden sticks will make your garden, indoor potted plants, or windows sparkle! Instructor Suzanne Balestri will guide you in glass cutting techniques an design considerations to create your own artful creations to compliment your garden or to display in a sunny window. You will also receive two instructional videos a few days before the workshop so you'll have a head start on what to expect. Students can make up to 3 pieces measuring approximately 1.5” x 11” each. All glass art will be kiln-fired after class and ready for pick up at the Craft Collective approximately one week after class. All materials are included, including 2 pre-class video instructions, and materials and firing for 3 glass pieces. Additional pieces can be made in class for $5 each (payable with cash in class). Materials fee of $10 (cash only) to be paid to the instructor at the start of the class. Beginners welcome. Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation presents our Art of Music fundraising event - a Mardi Gras Brunch on February 4th. Proceeds go toward Visual and Performing Arts scholarships for local high school students. At El Camino Country Club there will be jazz and a traditional New Orleans buffet - from jambalaya and etouffee to bread pudding with whiskey sauce. Entertainment will be Dylan Soto who is a past recipient of an OCAF scholarship. Guests will be greeted by costumed revelers with beads and a beverage. Multi-Grammy-winner Billy Childs has been a favorite performer on the Athenaeum series going back to his debut at the library in 1996. He remains one of the most diversely prolific and acclaimed artists working in music today. As a composer, he has been commissioned by Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Kronos Quartet, the Dorian Wind Quintet, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the American Brass Quintet, the Ying Quartet, the Lyris Quartet, and Anne Akiko Meyers. His canon of original compositions and arrangements has garnered him the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a composer’s award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and a Chamber Music America composer’s grant. Childs has received 17 Grammy nominations and 6 Grammy Awards (2 for Best Instrumental Jazz Album, 2 for Best Instrumental Composition, and 2 for Best Arrangement Accompanying a Vocalist). In this beginner-friendly course, students will learn slab building techniques to create their own vases using simple tools and techniques; no potter’s wheel required. Students will learn the differences between soft slab construction and stiff/hard slab construction to construct their own forms and patterns. The course will focus on three different vase shapes: simple cylinder, teardrop, or angular. Using the same slab building technique, students may also create small bud vases for singular flowers. Students will complete the course with a fully functional vase(s). While this is a beginner friendly course, more intermediate and advanced students may also join. Students will learn how to: wedge clay roll out slabs using a rolling pin and wooden guides compress slabs using a rubber rib and/or paddles strengthen clay in order to reduce air bubbles, cracks, and warping during the drying process use PVC pipes to create cylinder vases cut out shapes using patterns templates made of cardboard or cardstock attach slabs using the “score and slip” process, where joined seams are either visible or invisible decorate vases with ribbon tool or clay texture rollers soften rims of vases using ribs and chimoy clothes on banding wheel Materials: Please purchase a standard size wooden rolling pin and a beginners pottery tool kit. You do not need to purchase an extensive toolkit for this course, but please buy a kit which includes a metal rib, fettling knife, and scoring tool. Beginner kits are often very minimal but if you choose to continue pottery, the latter tools are incredibly helpful and you will likely need them later. If the metal rib, knife, and scoring tool are difficult to find, you can purchase a basic kit and buy these tools separately at Freeform Ceramics in National City, CA. Please bring a notebook/sketchbook and pen to class to keep track of wonderful ideas.
