McAlister Institute will host its 9th Annual Miracles of Recovery Luncheon on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at Coasterra on Harbor Island. This inspiring event brings together supporters, community leaders, and individuals in recovery to celebrate healing and expand access to life-changing treatment services. Hosted by NBC 7 News Anchor Omari Fleming, the luncheon will feature a keynote address from a special guest speaker, remarks from the Miracles of Recovery Awardee, and powerful personal stories that highlight the resilience of those on the path to recovery. The Center for World Music presents Mbira Bhururu: Songs of the Shona People of Zimbabwe at La Jolla Community Center. Experience the rich cultural and musical heritage of Zimbabwe through the traditional sounds of the mbira (Zimbabwean “thumb piano”), accompanied by the rhythmic pulse of hosho shakers. Played for over a thousand years, the mbira has been central to Shona spiritual ceremonies, storytelling, and community gatherings. The ensemble Mbira Bhururu offers audiences an exploration of the instrument’s intricate layered melodies, the interplay between rhythm and tune, and the ways music fosters cultural continuity and connection to ancestry. During the audience Q&A following the concert, attendees will have the opportunity to engage with the musicians, learning about Zimbabwean musical traditions and the ways these artists carry forward a centuries-old cultural legacy. Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) will host the “Igniting Hope, Building CommUNITY Family & Friends Festival" on Saturday, May 2, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Liberty Station Central Promenade (2641 Truxtun Rd, San Diego, CA 92106). In recognition of Foster Care Awareness Month, the free, community-centered event will bring together nonprofit organizations, community leaders, volunteers, and young people looking for a path to success for an afternoon of connection, celebration, and collaboration. Moving beyond a traditional resource fair, the festival is designed as an immersive experience that strengthens connections across people and services. It focuses on building a more coordinated and accessible support system for transition-age foster youth and other underserved populations. The event will bring together hundreds of young people seeking pathways to stability, alongside community leaders, families, and friends working to build meaningful relationships and advance a more connected, solutions-based model of support. Attendees from the broader community will also have the opportunity to connect with organizations, explore volunteer opportunities, and learn how to get involved in supporting local youth. The event will feature approximately 40 participating organizations offering resources across a wide range of services, including housing, education, job training, mental health support, financial literacy, and health services. Participating organizations will engage directly with attendees, showcase their impact, and connect with other peer organizations to identify gaps they can address together, helping to build stronger, more collaborative partnerships. Attendees can expect a lively, family-friendly atmosphere with live entertainment, interactive experiences, and local food. The event will feature a performance by San Diego-based artist Divina Jasso, along with entertainment from magician The Amazing Dana. Guests can also participate in yoga sessions, enjoy an open-air glam booth, and hear directly from two JIT youth speakers sharing their personal stories. This year’s honoree, Dr. Sonia Ancoli-Israel, is a world-renowned leader in sleep and circadian rhythm research. Her work has significantly advanced our understanding of sleep disorders, aging, and cancer, with meaningful improvements in patient care. Her record of scientific excellence, mentorship and dedication to advancing research reflects the core values and mission of ARCS Foundation, making her a highly deserving honoree. Dr. Ancoli-Israel is a Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Professor of Research at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from the State University of New York, Stony Brook, a Master’s Degree from California State University, Long Beach and a PhD in Psychology from the University of California, San Francisco.
