Garibaldi’s New 'Sip & Savor' Series in October is inspired by Greece! Created by Sous Chef Ashley, highlighting classic Greek comfort food elevated with local California produce. Stifado is a Greek comfort food stew, traditionally featuring rabbit or beef. In our Garibaldi version, we are preparing a boneless beef shortrib, presented traditionally with pearl onions, shallots, tomatoes, garlic, dried apricots, red wine, and red wine vinegar, while highlighting local San Diego vegetables. Stifado is a Greek variation of a classic beef stew with big, punchy flavors. What sets it apart from other stews are the warm spices that Greek people use in this dish - cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and bay leaves - making this a perfect fall dish. It's served with a crusty country loaf bread to soak up the delicious sauce. Kalí óreksi! The Library's Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 9 to October 3. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On October 23, we will close out this year's Autumn Concert Series with Pei-Chun Tsai on the violin, performing classical and chamber music repertoire. This concert is free to attend thanks to the support of the City of Coronado and the Friends of the Coronado Public Library. Seating is first come, first seated and doors will open at 12:45 p.m. Pei-Chun Tsai of Tainan, Taiwan, began her musical studies at the age of four, and made her solo debut in Carnegie Weill Recital Hall in 1997. She holds the first prize in the 1990 and 1992 Taiwan National Violin Competition, and was also a three time first-prize winner of the Tainan Violin Competition. She has performed as a soloist and a chamber musician in Paul Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center and the National Concert Hall in Taiwan. Following their 1994 debut at the Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, she has toured with The Muse Piano Quartet in Taiwan with the sponsorship of the Formosa Chamber Music Society. Pei-Chun has participated in the Alfred, Encore, Yellow Barn, and Taos summer music festivals in the United States as well as the Holland Music Session in Amsterdam. In addition to her performing career, Pei-Chun is a devoted teacher- she holds a Suzuki Teaching Certificate from the School for Strings. As a scholarship recipient of The Julliard School, she was on the faculty of the Ear Training Department in Juilliard pre-college division. She has been on the teaching faculties of the Lucy Moses School, Suzuki on the Island and was the founder of the Suzuki program at Resurrection Episcopal Day School in Manhattan. At the Juilliard School Pei-Chun studied with legendary violinist Joseph Fuchs. In addition, she has studied extensively with Earl Carlyss, Daniel Phillips, Harvey Shapiro, and Sally Thomas. For her DMA in violin performance her dissertation was entitled “Richard Strauss’ Violin Writing in His Early Years from 1870 to 1898- The Influence of the Violin Sonata.” She has been a member of the San Diego Symphony since 2006 and plays on a 1910 violin by Alfredo Contino.

Sibelius’s tone poem "Pohjola’s Daughter," inspired by the Finnish epic Kalevala, tells of a white bearded hero who glimpses the radiant daughter of the God of the North weaving gold on a rainbow. When she sets him impossible tasks, she vanishes into the sky, leaving him to journey alone through the frozen landscape. Sibelius translates this myth and the glow of the Northern Lights into orchestral poetry. Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor remains one of the most beloved Romantic concertos – lyrical, exuberant, and steeped in Norwegian folk-dance rhythms. Its soaring melodies and dazzling piano writing have captivated audiences for over a century. The program concludes with Nielsen’s Symphony No. 5, a gripping, two movement masterpiece written in the aftermath of World War I. Defiant and visionary, it contrasts serene lyricism with eruptive power, culminating in a blazing resolution in E flat Major. Its notorious snare drum battle still electrifies audiences, as chaos ultimately yields to radiant order – a breathtaking testament to human resilience and renewal.
