A Steampunk Tea at UCSD Geisel Library will act as an exhibit-opening celebration in the Library lobby area (at The Nest and the adjacent Classroom One.) Teens explore design & woodworking with a focus on chairs! Monday through Friday June 15 – 19, from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Ages 13+ years welcome! This week of Summer Camp is all about designing chairs for every body! The Craft Collective welcomes teens for a week of chair design, building, and design exploration. Why are most chairs the same size? We’ll talk about how chairs can be made for every BODY and how comfort and designs affect our bodies. We’ll be sketching designs with pencil to paper and then we’ll move into model making and prototypes of chairs. Along the way, we’ll talk about the basics of how a chair is built, the various forces, and how failures can happen when not built properly. We’ll do mock-ups with plywood to refine our designs. Depending on how many design iterations each chairmaker goes through, by the end of the week, they’ll have some fun designs, models, lots of knowledge, and hopefully built chairs to show for it. Machine and tool safety is a big part of this camp. It is intended for teens with a keen interest in woodworking, design, or making chairs. Cell phones will be put away during this camp. Teens must be at least 13 years old to participate, since we’ll be using big machines in addition to hand tools. Sorry, no adults allowed. This camp is for teens, ages 13-17 years. Contra dance is a living American tradition, very social (you'll dance with different partners, and with everyone as you progress up and down the line), and easy to do. If you come at 7 there's a lesson; and the caller teaches and guides each dance. If you can walk, you can dance! Come alone or bring a friend, wear what you like (with comfortable shoes), and dance whichever role you like, gender-neutral. Prohibition, located at 548 Fifth Ave., will kick off Father’s Day celebrations early with its WhistlePig Whiskey cocktail class from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10. Guests will have the chance to step behind the bar and craft their own cocktails while sampling three featured drinks and exclusive single-barrel selections. A WhistlePig brand ambassador will guide guests through the featured pours and share information about the brand. Guests will also be able to purchase exclusive single-barrel bottles, house-made spirits, bitters and Old Fashioned kits to recreate the cocktail experience at home.
