We are HeArt and Mind, a group of high school students at Del Norte High School dedicated to teaching kids in elementary school how to express their emotions through art. We have an upcoming event at the 4S Ranch Library on April 15 from 3:15-4:45 where we will be hosting a fun and engaging workshop along with a read aloud of our book, "HeArt and Mind presents: Hector the Hedgehog Discovers Colorful Emotions." Rooted in African-American freedom struggles and Igbo cosmology, The Skeuomorph unfolds as a poetic meditation on technological agency and the myths we encode in our machines. At the center of the exhibition stands BLKBX (BB)—a sculptural object, a "smarter" speaker and a speculative AI entity trained on documents of African American and African Diasporic histories, biographies and philosophies of freedom. Through a multisensory installation featuring reimagined political speeches, archival fragments, and layered sonic environments, the exhibition invites visitors to consider how history reverberates in the present—shaping the voices we amplify, the ones we silence, and the futures we imagine. Co-sponsored by the Department of Visual Arts Visiting Speaker Series, this event includes panel discussion with Louis Chude-Sokei, Professor and George and Joyce Wein Chair of English and Director of the African American and Black Diaspora Studies Program at Boston University; in addition to recently publishing The Sound of Culture: Diaspora and Black Technopoetics (2015), Chude-Sokei collaborated with Berlin based electronic artists Mouse on Mars, with whom he produced the album Anarchic Artificial Intelligence (2021). Betty Boop has been a cultural icon for nearly 100 years. In collaboration with Fleischer Studios, this one-of-a-kind exhibit embarks on a nostalgic journey, starting with Betty’s beginnings to her rise to international popularity—and what makes her a fan favorite today. First introduced in 1930, Betty Boop was created by Max Fleischer for his “Talkartoons” series, the world’s first animated “talkies,” which Max’s company, Fleischer Studios, produced for Paramount Studios. While she first appeared in the animated film Dizzy Dishes as a dog-like singer, she quickly lost her canine features and was given the name Betty Boop in 1931, making her the first female animated screen star in history. Personifying the fabulous flappers and jazz artists of the day, she was also the earliest animated character to be on broadcast television, drawn live on-air by creator Max Fleischer. Also highlighted are the eight women who have voiced Betty over the years, and history and animation enthusiasts will appreciate the focus on innovative industry pioneers Max and Dave Fleischer, founders of Fleischer Studios and inventors of the rotoscope.
