We welcome you and your family & friends to join us as we craft and honor the rich traditions of Día de los Muertos! Join us on Friday, October 2, from 4 – 7 p.m. at San Diego Craft Collective, located in the Dorothea Laub Building in the Arts District of Liberty Station in Point Loma! Stop by and explore traditional crafts! Learn to handmake paper flowers, mini altars, and festive crowns in honor of the upcoming holiday. Donations are welcome for participating in these activities. A contribution of $15 per person is appreciated to help us cover our costs. Donations can be made here. It is a time when families honor and welcome back the souls of their deceased loved ones with food, music, and joyful celebrations. This crafting event creates a heart-centered and safe space for all ages to honor their loved ones—both people and animals—who have passed. We invite families to learn, create, and celebrate together. This is a non-scary, family-friendly crafting time designed to foster cultural awareness, connection, and joy while celebrating the traditions of Día de los Muertos in our community. Taste of North Park returns on Saturday, October 3, with more than 50 food tastings and 15 beverage stops available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets for the 15th annual event are $50 for food only and $65 for food and sips. There is also a Shareable Sip Ticket for $85, which is good for one food tasting to be shared and two tasting cups for drinks. All ticket options can be purchased at www.tasteofnorthpark.com, and the event sells out every year. Participating businesses include Finca, a wine bar and bottle shop that was named to Wine Spectator Magazine’s international list of its Editors’ Favorite Wine Bars in the October 31, 2025, issue. Falafel Heights, with Arabic food made from scratch, and One of Us, “San Diego’s Home for Women’s Sports,” are also participating. Other locations include Big City Bagels, Jeni's Ice Creams, Mr. Moto Pizza, North Park Beer Company, and The Original 40 Brewing Company. The final lineup will be announced the week of the event, which will also showcase indie shops, live music, and art. Check-in is at North Park Mini Park at 3812 29th Street. CommUnity Mural Dedication and Ribbon-Cutting, Oct. 10 Free dedication event celebrates four years of community collaboration and the work of more than a dozen local artists WHAT: Join Logan Heights CDC, local artists and neighbors to celebrate the dedication of the CommUnity Mural Project. See the completed murals beneath the I-5 and SR-15 freeways along Imperial Avenue, enjoy live music and refreshments, and meet some of the people who brought the artwork to life. Four years in the making, the project features the work of more than a dozen local artists and contributions from community members. Together, the murals celebrate the history, culture, music and stories of The Greater Logan Heights while transforming the spaces beneath the freeways into colorful neighborhood landmarks. "Modern Relics" invites artists to explore the everyday artifacts of contemporary life—subjects we use, love, hoard, worship, discard, or somehow refuse to throw away. Think: of the things that will be discarded, outdated or irrelevant in the future. Juror Vallo Riberto is an American independent art curator, educator and fine artist based in San Diego, California. Best known for his extensive academic career and avant-garde art curations, he served as the Director of the Southwestern College Art Gallery and has curated prominent exhibitions across Southern California. Riberto’s foundational knowledge spans studio arts and extensive art history. His academic pedigree includes training at some of the most prestigious art institutions in the United States. Come together with family, friends, and the community at large at a special, free community event celebrating and honoring Día de los Muertos. Enjoy live performances, family-friendly art-making activities, and a special Día de los Muertos ofrenda created by visiting artist Betsabeé Romero in collaboration with local San Diego students, all in the Balboa Park Plaza de Panama in front of The San Diego Museum of Art and free to the community. Through artist-designed artmaking activities, community members will be invited to honor loved ones, share memories, and contribute meaningful objects and creative responses to the ofrenda on view in the plaza. Romero will join the Museum community for the inauguration of the SDMA ofrenda on Sunday, November 1 at 11 a.m. on the Museum’s front steps. The Taco Party, a gathering featuring unlimited street-style tacos, refreshing beverages, music, and a festive atmosphere, is a ticketed event complementing Día de los Muertos at SDMA. Free admission to The San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA) and the Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art (MOPA@SDMA) on Sunday, November 1 at noon–5 p.m. further complements the Día de los Muertos celebration. For some, cheesy horror films elicit eyerolls if not derision. For others, these films hold a campy, or even nostalgic, appeal. Few, however, see these films as critically brilliant or as culturally important works of art. With attention to films such as "Dracula’s Daughter" (1936), "Satan’s School for Girls" (1973), "VelociPastor" (2017), and "Amityville in Space" (2022), this talk proposes that in cheesy horror films we actually encounter substance and significance. This talk thus encourages broader ways of both enjoying and appreciating and otherwise approaching these films. Phillip Serrato (B.A., M.A., Ph.D. University of California, Riverside) is an associate professor of English and Comparative Literature at San Diego State University. His research interests include gothic and horror studies, Chicanx literature, film, and performance, and children’s and YA literature. At the undergraduate level he teaches introductory surveys of children’s and YA literature as well as upper-division special topics courses such as “Cheesy Horror Cinema” and “Stranger Things.” At the graduate level he teaches seminars in Chicanx children’s literature, children’s gothic and horror literature and film, and the gothic literary tradition. He is currently at work on a number of research projects, including a book on gothic literature and media and another on Chicanx children’s literature.
