Learn to Carve a Gourd! September 13, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. November 1, 9 a.m.-1p.m. In this workshop, you will learn to craft a gourd lantern while learning the lore of our ancestors’ first storage container, provided by Mother Nature herself. From the dawn of civilization, humans have found endless uses for gourds– beautiful and functional members of the squash family. True gourds are extremely strong and lightweight. Over the centuries, humans have selected varieties for specific shape and size to create an astonishing number of useful items: musical instruments, water bottles, yogurt and cheese-making vessels, honey storage, alcohol fermentation and storage, bowls, cups, bird houses, floatation devices, grain storage and even cooking vessels. In this class, you will start with a natural, cured gourd and learn the steps of carefully cutting it open, removing seeds, cleaning it, drawing patterns that, in turn, will be carved out to allow the glow of the lantern to light up an outdoor area or indoor space. In this class, you we will learn to use rotary tools, scrapers, rechargeable drills, and handheld jigsaws. Each student will install a low-wattage LED light on the interior of the gourd, along with a lamp cord complete with a plug end. All materials and tools will be provided. This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class.

Learn to throw ceramics on a wheel! Sundays, Sept 13, 20, 27, Oct 4, 18, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., with last class 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This beginner-friendly 5-week pottery course focused on learning the foundations of wheel throwing while creating functional and personal ceramic pieces. Throughout the 5-week course, students will explore wheel throwing fundamentals including centering, pulling walls, trimming, foot rings, handle attachment, surface decoration, underglazes, and glazing techniques. During the first week, students will be introduced to the pottery wheel and learn the basics of centering and shaping simple forms while getting comfortable working with clay. In the second week, students will continue building confidence on the wheel while creating more intentional functional forms such as mugs, bowls, and small plates. The third week focuses on trimming and refinement techniques, including foot rings, surface cleanup, and handle attachment to help elevate and finish each piece. During the fourth week, students will explore surface design and decoration using underglazes, texture, carving, and decorative details to give their work its own personality and style. After bisque firing (no class week), the final class will focus on glazing and finishing techniques. Students will learn how different glazes interact and complete their finished ceramic pieces. This course is designed for complete beginners as well as students looking to strengthen their skills. Ages 16+ years

Self-Love Self-Portrait is a creative and empowering workshop designed to help participants reconnect with themselves through art. Through guided reflection, gentle prompts, and intentional observation, participants will explore identity, personal narrative, and emotional well-being while creating a self-portrait in drawing or painting. Led by artist and muralist Gloria Muriel, the session encourages self-acceptance, compassion, and curiosity, offering a safe, welcoming space for creative expression. No prior art experience is required — all levels are encouraged to participate. Celebrate the summer solstice with two ocean-loving poets—North County's own Carly Marie DeMento and surfer Michael Klam. Join them for the release of two new books—the "2025-2026 San Diego Poetry Annual" and Klam's latest collection of poetry and visual art, "Stay There," Garden Oak Press: 2026. Carly Marie DeMento is a poet and third-generation San Diegan. Her poetry has appeared in the North American Review, Kestrel, and Green Hills Literary Lantern—and been hung in the best spot of all: friends' kitchens. Nominated for Best New Poets in 2025, Carly's work is supported by Bread Loaf Writers' Conference. She is the co-creator of "Desire, Calling"—a reading series that features queer writers, a dance party, and a fundraiser for local nonprofits. Michael Klam is associate publisher of the San Diego Poetry Annual. He is editor-in-chief of the bilingual edition of the SDPA. Klam hosts San Diego Central Library’s Conversations with Poets. His books include "The Cheapest Flight to Paradise" (Puna Press: 2017), "Anything for a Dull Moment" (Garden Oak Press: 2020), and "Stay There" (Garden Oak Press: 2026).
