Starting at the age of 8, he spent ten years studying classical piano performance, music theory, and creative music expression. Raised in New York and Chicago, he returned to New York City in the 80s and spent many years playing music full-time in Manhattan. While living in New York, Wolff studied with several great pianists: Barry Harris (Keeper of the Bebop Flame), Mike Longo (Musical Director for Dizzy Gillespie), and Kenny Werner (Author of Effortless Mastery and a global music legend). He also performed/recorded with many great jazz players including Victor Lewis, Calvin Hill, Rebecca Franks, and others. He was fortunate to record with two of Ahmad Jamal’s drummers: Vernel Fournier and Frank Gant. (Vernel Fournier is credited with developing the iconic drumbeat used in Jamal’s recording of “Poinciana” in the 1950s.) During this time, Wolff also taught music at the Johnny Colon School of Music in East Harlem, as well as playing in clubs, restaurants, cafes, and private engagements throughout the New York City region. In 1987, he was approached by Long Island University in Brooklyn and offered a full music scholarship. He received a degree with honors in 1990. Relocating to San Diego in the 1990s, Adam Wolff performed with different groups, ranging from jazz to popular dance music to creative expression performances. In 2004, he co-founded Blue44, a music collective with a distinctive theme of “ambient grooves”. Wolff’s music contains key elements of excitement and hard-swinging, soulful, creative musical expression. These elements come through in all his performances. She welcomes you to the show, thanks you for coming, and the band rips into its opening chords. As dancers rush to the floor, the smile on Mercedes’ face grows more radiant; you’re in her world and nothing else matters. You might think she was destined to do this, but you’d be wrong. Moore grew up doubting her skills, “I didn’t think that I could sing.” She says. “I didn’t think it was possible.” That was then, this is now. Today, fronting her own band, Mercedes works hard to be more than a voice. She wants fans to feel the music, the way she feels the music. Watching faces in the crowd on this night, as Mercedes swings through an extensive playlist of ballads, blues, and soul shakers, it’s obvious she has them right where she wants them. As a nine-time San Diego Music Award nominee, Moore performs regularly with some of Southern California’s premier musicians. When asked, Moore is straightforward about the multitude of players. “It just makes you a better singer.” She smiles. “And different people have different strengths. Plus, I want to learn, so I can be better.” It appears to be working. Mercedes Moore is currently juggling four major projects and her music can range from blues, gospel, and R&B and swing. Join us for a collaborative presentation featuring speaker Molly McClain, PhD. Presented by MCASD and the La Jolla Historical Society, this program is the latest installment of the Ellen Browning Scripps Lecture Series. We invite you to explore the rich historical narratives that shape our region through this engaging and informative session. Ellen Browning Scripps transformed the idea of what it meant to “improve” a community. When most civic leaders of her era spoke of “beautification,” they meant adding ornamental gardens, grand buildings, and formal parks. Scripps looked at La Jolla and saw something different, a place where natural beauty could become the highest form of civic art. In her vision, preservation could be more transformative than any construction project. Tonight, we’ll look at how her philosophy shaped La Jolla, the Torrey Pines reserve, and the character of San Diego’s coastal communities.
