Beautiful PB is bringing new life to a long-vacant mid-century modern building in the heart of Pacific Beach, with a vision to transform it into a vibrant center for the arts. While development plans move forward, the organization is launching its first-ever Summer Camp series at the PB Arts Commons—an outdoor gathering space located behind the future PB Arts Center at 4606 Ingraham Street. Registration is now open for programs beginning June 1. The Summer Camps offer a diverse lineup of creative experiences, including sewing, dramatic expression, technology, gardening, and fashion. Designed for youth ages 0–16, the series also features a “Mommy and Me” art-making workshop for younger participants and caregivers. “While we continue fundraising efforts to bring the PB Arts Center to life, we are excited to activate the PB Arts Commons with engaging arts programming for the community,” said Michelle Sexton, Vice Chair of the PB Arts Center. “Our vision of a shared space that connects artists, students, and residents will begin to take shape this summer.” Advance registration is encouraged: https://www.pbartscenter.org/summer-camps/ Community partners for the series include Creative Cornucopia, Clickbitz, and The Music Company. **Note special hours for exhibition opening: Saturday, June 27, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Visions Museum of Textile Art is honored to be one of four U.S. venues to host the "17th Quilt Nihon," making a debut of this internationally recognized exhibition in San Diego. This exhibit features award-winning, innovative works from the biennial competition of the Japanese Handicraft Instructor’s Association (JHIA). Quilt Nihon is the largest international quilt contest in Japan, and one of the most prestigious in the world. For 50 years now, JHIA has promoted handcrafted arts in Japan by educating and training instructors in eight specialties: quilting, knitting, embroidery, lace making, painting, weaving, leatherwork, and flower art. The JHIA boasts 7,000 certified quilt instructors among its 12,000 members. Its biennial Quilt Nihon exhibition is a unique opportunity to appreciate the creativity and complexity of these works of art. This year’s exhibition features award-winning and notable works in its selection. Expanding the notion of “family” beyond bloodline or inheritance, the exhibition embraces broader forms of collectivity—chosen families, cultural lineages, ideological kinships, and experiences—that serve as touchstones for our shared existence. At its core, "Becoming Heirlooms" considers the moment when a crafted object transcends authorship and utility to become a site of collective feeling—when an artist’s intention resonates beyond the individual viewer and ignites a shared emotional consciousness. These works become gathering points for empathy, reflection, and recognition, binding communities through the realities of the world they inhabit together. This month, The New Children’s Museum is teaming up with Nickelodeon to celebrate SpongeBob SquarePants with a special, limited-time Museum takeover filled with art, play, and hands-on fun. As part of Nickelodeon’s worldwide SpongeBob birthday celebration, we’re transforming the Museum with playful experiences inspired by everyone’s favorite underwater world. From July 11-20, families can explore creative activities, discover surprises throughout the Museum, and experience new ways to think, play, and create together.
