Miramar Marines to Simulate Plane Crash Tonight

Smoke and flames will probably be seen by people who live and drive by Marine Corps Air Station Miramar tonight. Military officials say they'll be conducting a controlled burn on the base tonight.

Sergeant Brian Leto says officials are simulating a plane crash site. He says a key part of the exercise is having fire crews put out a fuel fire.

Leto : We actually have a pit reserved for controlled burns and what we do is, it’s typically filled with five to seven thousand gallons of water. And on top of the water we float about 300 gallons of jet fuel. Light it on fire in a controlled manner and put it out to give training to our personnel.

Leto says drifting smoke might be seen along interstate 15 when the exercise begins around 9 p.m. However, he says the fire won't burn very long.
