Global Warming Said to Worsen Allergies, Asthma

Global warming is predicted to make allergies and asthma worse in some areas of the country. KPBS Environmental Reporter Ed Joyce tells us our region is one of those areas.

The Natural Resources Defense Council has mapped regions that are most affected by ragweed and smog, such as Los Angeles. Both ragweed, the pollen of which is a common allergen, and smog, otherwise known as ground-level ozone pollution, have been linked to respiratory problems, including asthma.

The NRDC's Kim Knowlton says global warming will make life more miserable for people suffering from allergies and asthma.

Knowlton : Global warming could actually make each of those conditions worse in the future 'cause each of those responds to enhanced carbon dioxide and warmer temperatures.

She says more ozone monitoring stations and ragweed tracking systems can help people know when to reduce their exposure to the allergens. About 36 million Americans suffer from some form of seasonal allergy. It's estimated that 17 million children and adults in the United States suffer from asthma.
