Camp Pendleton will celebrate the birthday of the Marine Corps on Friday with the 2012 Marine Corps Birthday Pageant.

The pageant will take place at 10 a.m. at the 11 Area football field on base. What to expect? Well...

The pageant will include the massing of colors from all units aboard the base and music from the 1st Marine Division Band. In addition, Marines dressed in period-related uniforms will narrate significant combat operations throughout the history of the Marine Corps, dating back to 1775.

And, there will be cake. The traditional cake-cutting ceremony in the Marine Corps requires the first piece to be presented to the oldest Marine, and the second piece to the youngest - at least according to USMC Press.

The Marine Corps was 'born,' so to speak, on November 10, 1775 when the Continental Congress drafted a resolution "calling for two battalions of Marines able to fight for independence at sea and on shore," according to the Marines' website.

Happy 237th birthday!
