Ben Hueso Sworn In To State Senate

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Democrats have regained their supermajority in the Senate after the chamber's newest member was sworn in.

Ben Hueso of San Diego left the Assembly after winning the 40th Senate District seat during a special election earlier this month. He replaces another Democrat, Juan Vargas, who won a congressional seat.

In remarks to his new colleagues Thursday, Hueso recounted the story of his father, who came to the U.S. from Mexico in the years after World War II, earned a college degree and went on to a career in social work. Hueso said each of the family's nine children attained a college degree, which he said was remarkable in a neighborhood where most children failed to graduate high school.
