A report on ocean conditions released this week finds marine creatures are being hurt by the growing din of underwater noise pollution. KPBS Reporter Erik Anderson has details.

The Natural Resources Defense Council study finds man-made noises in the ocean are creating a long term threat to marine life.

The study's author Michael Jasny says he's particularly concerned about possible U.S. Navy plans to expand an undersea training area just off the San Diego coast. Jasny says that training would involve using high and medium frequency sonar, systems linked to whale and dolphin strandings.

Jasny: "This training range would, if its anything like the one proposed off the east coast, involve over 160 exercises each year."

He says there needs to be a concerted effort to reduce ocean noises from all sources. Erik Anderson, KPBS News
