House Republicans efforts to pass a controversial immigration and border security bill stalled Thursday. Jill Morrison caught up with San Diego lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

House Republicans expected to make significant progress on the bill. But divisions within the GOP forced their lawmakers into a closed afternoon meeting to work out differences.

Alpine Republican Duncan Hunter says he believes the bill will ultimately pass, but he's most enthusiastic about an amendment he's introduced expanding the fence that divides the U.S. and Mexico.

Hunter: "The San Diego section which we have fenced has been enormously successful. We've stopped the murders, the drive-thru drug smuggling, the criminals from coming in and we've pushed back the smuggling of illegal aliens and narcotics. Extending that fence is a sure way to success. It works."

Republicans finally agreed to move forward with border security provisions late this afternoon and hope for agreements on guest worker programs and stricter law enforcement measures tomorrow. From Capitol Hill, Jill Morrison, KPBS news.
