Federal anti-trust regulators will allow fortune 500 company Qualcomm to buy up a competing wireless communication firm called Flarion Technologies. KPBS Reporter Erik Anderson has more.

Both companies are firmly entrenched in the wireless communication business. San Diego based Qualcomm's business is largely tied to the way cell phones process data. They make and license chips that enable cell phones to transfer large digital files. The New Jersey based Flarion Technologies has developed a mobile broadband technology that enables wireless carriers to offer IP-based voice, video and data services.

Qualcomm officials say Flarion's product will work with their chip technology. The deal expands the kind of wireless services the Southern California communication company can offer.
