Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid toured the California Mexico border today. Reid called for comprehensive immigration reform in advance of next week's Senate immigration debate. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
U.S. Senator Harry Reid took a break from his border tour to speak with the media at the San Ysdiro port of entry. He said immigration reform must include three elements.
Reid: "Border security, number one. Number two, we have to have a guest worker program. And number three, we have to have a path of the ability of the 11-million people who are undocumented in our country to earn a change of status."
The Senate judiciary committee reached important compromises on a bill last week that would include a guest worker program. It would also allow for some illegal immigrants already here to earn citizenship.
But, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said he'd introduce an enforcement only bill.
Reid said he'll do everything possible to stop Frist's bill. Amy Isackson, KPBS News.
