San Diego City Attorney Mike Aguirre said Friday he'll recommend that the city council fire its high-priced consultants. The cash-strapped city has paid Kroll's consultants more than $16 million to make sense of its fiscal crisis. But the firm has yet to produce a report. KPBS Reporter Amita Sharma has more.

The city hired Kroll more than a year ago. Since then, the firm has returned to the council half a dozen times to ask for more money. Kroll also hasn't set a firm deadline on when its work will be finished. Meanwhile, it has turned in scores of bills without itemizing its work. Kroll representatives have said they don't have the technology to itemize. City Attorney Mike Aguire outlined why the city should give the firm the boot.

Aguirre: Because there was a failure to maintain the deadlines that were set. Because the city's billing guidelines were violated and because the scope of the investigation by Kroll was expanded to hemispheric boundaries, I'm going to recommend the city should fire Kroll and sue them.

Mayor Jerry Sanders could not be reached to comment on Aguirre's recommendation. Amita Sharma, KPBS News.
