Conservative republican Howard Kaloogian announced today he'll drop out of the next round of elections to replace convicted congressman Randy Cunningham. But Kaloogian says he will not throw his support behind Brian Bilbray who won the April special primary to complete Cunningham's term.

Former Assemblyman Howard Kaloogian says conservative republicans were split in the April primary between himself, State Senator Bill Morrow and newcomer Eric Roach.

Kaloogian says those voters wont turn out for Bilbray in the race against democrat Francine Busby in June.

Kaloogian: "I think that a lot of conservatries will take a look at Busby and Bilbray and say there's not a lot of difference, they both pro choice both would raise taxes, both say they're against illegal immigration and so a lot of conservatives voters would stay home and so you have to have a conservative to vote for and that would be in my opinion, Eric Roach."

Roach, a Santa Fe millionaire, has not yet declared his intention but is running a radio ad saying there is more work to be done. Alison St John, KPBS news.

Alison St John currently serves as a general assignment reporter and occasionally co-hosts KPBS Midday Edition. She has done many stories on the military in San Diego, and the series she edited on the challenges veterans face returning from active duty to civilian life won “Best of Show” from the San Diego Society of Professional Journalists. She occasionally hosts the KPBS Roundtable and KPBS Midday Edition. Alison has won awards from the San Diego Press Club, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Press TV and Radio Association, and the California Golden Mike Awards. Alison was born in Tanzania, brought up in Scotland, and earned her degree in psychology and sociology from Durham University in England. Her postgraduate diploma is in student counseling. She worked in England, Nigeria, Switzerland, Belgium, India, and Japan before moving to the United States in 1981. She now lives in Oceanside and enjoys how her community is growing and changing.
