Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger disapproves of President George Bush's plan to use the National Guard along California's border with Mexico. The governor commented while visiting an Oceanside school today.
He says California's National Guard is already stretched too thin and cannot take on additional assignments. Schwarzenegger says the federal government should only rely on the Guard to help them during wartime and natural disasters. He says California will desperately need the troops when a natural disaster strikes.
If it's an earthquake or huge fires or a mudslide or a flood, or whatever it is, you know this state gets hit more often than another state and for that we need the national guard to help us.
Schwarzenegger says he'll remain open-minded but does not believe the Guard should be stationed on the border permanently. Schwarzenegger joins a handful of Republican lawmakers who are worried about Bush's newest proposal to curb illegal immigration.
