San Diego County's school superintendent is stepping down in just three weeks and his successor has not yet been named. The county school board convened a special meeting Monday to choose the new leader but did not make a decision. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

The recruitment and selection process has been a well-guarded secret. The names and the exact number of candidates have been kept quiet for the past year. Officials say that's out of consideration for the applicants, many of whom are currently employed as superintendents elsewhere. The county's school board is under a deadline to pick a leader. Castruita leaves the post in three weeks. Schools spokesman Jim Esterbrooks says the board is carefully considering the final pool of candidates.

Esterbrooks: Its usually not a real quick decision to fill a position of this magnitude. So long as we have someone in place by the time Rudy leaves, we'll be in great shape.

The next leader will manage a $400-million budget and oversee 42 school districts serving half-a-million students. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
