A new survey released Tuesday indicates 6.6 million uninsured Californians are being overcharged for their prescription drugs. Mary Sweeters of the CALPIRG Education Fund says the situation in California is representative of a growing trend across the United States. She urges politicians to get involved.

Sweeters: The time has come for state and federal officials to address the rapidly rising cost of prescription drugs. Some of these policy reforms may be a bitter pill for the pharmaceutical industry, but they are simply good medicine for runaway drug costs, and the only real prescription for the uninsured.

Sweeters says one policy recommendation is to increase the availability of generic drugs. The CALPIRG report finds that on average, uninsured San Diegans are paying 60-percent more than the federal government for prescription drugs.
