California researchers have received a $4.5 million federal grant to track heat-related deaths and emergency room visits to study how global warming could affect public health.

The study is funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It will project how rising temperatures could increase the number of heat-caused fatalities and illnesses such as asthma, heat stroke and heart attacks in the decades to come.

The study is believed to be the first to examine the relationship between global warming and emergency-room visits.
