A record number of students are attending Cal State San Marcos this fall semester. The students flooded the campus Thursday on opening day. KPBS Radio Ana Tintocalis has more.
Close to 8,500 students are enrolled at CSU San Marcos. That's a 17 percent increase from last year. School spokesman Darren Bush tracks the university's enrollment. He says the spike is significant, but he's not surprised the university is growing so quickly. Bush says Cal State San Marcos is under a mandate to increase its enrollment by 6 to 7 percent every year.
Bush: "Of the 23 CSU campuses, our campus is charged to grow at one of the highest rates within the system. So we have planned for this but certainly, this kind of growth, I really think, reflects a growing awareness of our campus."
Bush also says the university has made room for more students who want to live at the school. This year 575 students are living on campus - that's 100 more students than last year. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
