George Gershwin may be the greatest popular song writer who ever lived. Part of his success was due to his partnership with his brother, the gifted lyricist Ira Gershwin. Part of it was due to George’s ability to span musical genres. He was a writer of popular songs, a jazz musician and a classical composer who performed in concert halls.
There have been many odes to George Gershwin. One of them has lately been pleasing audiences at San Diego’s Old Globe theater. The show is called George Gershwin Alone . It’s a one-man show featuring pianist-actor-singer Hershey Felder.
George Gershwin Alone plays at the Old Globe Theater until October 22. Monsieur Chopin is on for a special week-long engagement at the Old Globe from October 26 to the 31st. And Beethoven has its world premiere in 2007.
