Judge Rejects Part of City's Conservation Plan

The judge rejected part of the city of San Diego’s Multiple Species Conservation Program. The court ruled that the city’s plan doesn’t conserve the rarest species, such as fairy shrimp, that live in vernal pool wetland areas. The Center for Biological Diversity was one of several conservation groups that challenged the city’s program. Center spokesman David Hogan says the ruling could have widespread implications.

Hogan: Plans need to go beyond just preventing extinction of species and actually contribute to their recovery especially in those cases where large scale plans like this one in San Diego encompass the majority of a species range.”

The judge ordered the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to stop current or projected development on the vernal pool sites and revise its conservation plan for seven species in San Diego. The federal agency may appeal the ruling. Ed Joyce, KPBS News.
