Here’s something to think about over the Thanksgiving bird today.  If you average it out, most Californians eat about one good-sized turkey a year. Not all at once, of course. Dave Kranz with the California Farm Bureau Federation says that’s more than people in other states.

Kranz: The national average is about 18 pounds of turkey per person per year and here in California we consume about 21 pounds of turkey per year.”

According to the California Poultry Federation, more turkey is sold for sandwiches than for the Thanksgiving table each year. That’s a turnaround from 15 or 20 years ago. The group estimates that Californians will eat about 14 million turkeys today.
