San Diego County Supervisor have picked a developer to embark on a major consolidation of County buildings . KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

The County Registrar of Voters Office in Kearny Mesa will move, as part of major changes the Supervisors are planning to meet the County’s needs over the next 20 years.  County Administrator Walt Ekard acknowledged it will cost over $400 million to move over 1,000 employees out of the aging complex that currently houses the Registrar, plus Fleet Maintenance Services and a Family Resource Center.  .

Ekard: To do nothing obviously is not an option. At the same time, it’s a big price tag.

Supervisors say they want to phase in the changes over several years to avoid going over the County’s debt limit. The developer, L.A. based Lowe Enterprises, will pay the County between $30 million - $50 million to  build homes, shops and offices on the land the Registrar of Voters now occupies.
