Local Senior Center Seeks New Location

A vital gathering place for low income seniors in San Diego is facing the termination of its lease in downtown. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

The Senior Community Center at Broadway and 9th is the largest Senior Center in the County. After nearly 20 years in its current location, it is now forced to look for a new home. Director Paul Downey says several hundred low income seniors come every day for meals, warmth, social services and human contact.

Downey:  The typical senior we work with is living below the poverty level on an average on an average of $750 to $800 a month so this is a critical hub of services for seniors throughout the county.

Downey says the Center’s location is key, since seniors use public transport to get there and virtually every bus coming downtown stops right outside. He hopes to negotiate a new lease for a center in a former church nearby. That will take $3 million to convert and refurbish. Alison St John, KPBS news.
