S.D. School Officials Crack Down on Drugs

It has been more than a decade since law enforcement officials have launched a drug sting at San Diego high schools. Fifteen students were arrested Wednesday after a four-month narcotic investigation. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

San Diego Police officials launched the investigation partly because more San Diego students are getting kicked out of school for drug-related offenses. School Superintendent Carl Cohn knew about the four-month investigation from the start. District spokesman Dick Van Der Laan says Cohn plans to actively enforce the district’s zero tolerance policy on drugs this year.

Van Der Laan: One of the key things right up there with accelerating student gains in student performance is providing safe schools and this is a very important part of school safety.

Police say the students have been expelled and suspended. Van Der Laan says a similar drug sting took place when Cohn led the Long Beach Unified School District. He didn’t say whether more operations are underway at other San Diego campuses.  Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
