Chula Vista Mayor Opposes Power Plant Redevelopment Project

An aging power plant on the waterfront in Chula Vista may make way for a redevelopment project. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce tells us the power plant is also located in an area mentioned for a new Chargers stadium.

The company that leases the South Bay Power Plant wants to replace it with a natural gas-fired plant. LS Power says a new plant could provide enough energy for about 600,000 homes. Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox says she’s against the idea.

Cox: Without a power plant on the bay front, we’re looking at possibly 125 acres up to 150 acres. It’s a giant piece of property.

The existing power plant is within the city’s 560-acre waterfront redevelopment project and an area mentioned for a new Chargers stadium. But the South Bay plant can’t simply be torn down. The state agency that operates the California power grid says the plant must keep operating until other power sources are found to replace it. LS Power’s current lease with the Port of San Diego expires in 2009.
