Two customs inspections agents -- one border crossing lane. That's the gist of a new pilot program to cut down on wait times at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.

Lane five at the San Ysidro border crossing now has two inspection booths. Vince Bond with Customs and Border Protection says his agency wants to see if having two inspectors per lane speeds up traffic.

Bond: Computer studies showed in a perfect world that it could facilitate traffic, and we're doing a real world test project for a couple of months to see if that's true and if its feasible.

Bond says if the program does ease wait times, and if San Diego officials get federal approval, they'll expand it to other lanes. Though, Bond says Customs and Border Protection does not have enough agents for double booths in all lanes. Computer studies show having two agents per lane speeds crossings by 35 to 45-percent. The double booths in lane five are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Amy Isackson, KPBS News.
