Immigrants' Rights Group: ICE Agents on the Prowl

An immigrants' rights group is receiving reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, known as ICE, have stepped up their presence around San Diego County. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.

Christian Ramirez with the American Friends Service Committee says eight people have called his office this week from Barrio Logan, Chula Vista and Escondido.

Ramirez: Most of the reports are by neighbors who witness white vehicles with no clear markings and usually three or four ICE agents. They search a residence and detain the people they are looking for.

Ramirez says ICE agents often also detain family members or friends who happen to be at the house. Ramirez says those people aren't on ICE's list but may be in the country without documents.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Lauren Mack says her agency periodically beefs up its efforts to detain people who have been ordered deported but are still in the country. She would not comment further. Amy Isackson, KPBS News.
