A new report ranks California fifth in the nation in terms of providing state-funded services and support to people with developmental disabilities. The report comes from the non-profit United Cerebral Palsy. KPBS reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
California leads the nation in total spending on programs for the developmentally disabled. But the report ranks the state only 20th in spending per family.
Dave Carucci heads up the San Diego chapter of United Cerebral Palsy. He says it's always a struggle to get lawmakers to allocate more money.
Carucci : I think it needs to be prioritized. There have been many cases where there's not much left over, and whatever really happens in terms of funding services for people with developmental disabilities is kind of like an afterthought.
The report gives California high marks for supporting people in home-like settings. Still, the report says California houses more than 3,000 developmentally-disabled in large institutions.
