California ranks 39th in the country in a new report that measures state's levels of health insurance coverage and quality of care. The report uses information from a host of government sources. KPBS reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
The report comes from the non-profit Commonwealth Fund . The study looks at 32 different health indicators, and groups these into five areas of performance.
The report ranks California second-to-last in the country in quality.
Commonwealth Foundation vice president Steve Schoenbaum says there's one main reason for that.
Schoenbaum : Coverage for care is very much related to quality of care. And about 25 percent of the adult population not yet on Medicare in California is uninsured.
Schoenbaum says researchers found no connection between spending and quality. He says the top ranked states all have one thing in common: a high rate of health insurance coverage.
